Last Monday I had the pleasure of eating lunch at Al Barakah Lebanese Bakery in Balsall Heath, Birmingham. A wonderful recommendation by Chris Sutton at St Paul’s Venture. I wandered off Moseley Road and followed directions to the bakery, upon arriving I was delighted to see a lovely open kitchen and a very friendly atmosphere. I was greeted by Abbas and his co-chef who were cooking away in the kitchen creating Lebanese delicacies. I sat down at a table and gazed out of the dual-aspect windows - watching the world go by - and had a very pleasant lunch. I chose fresh Khobez - Lebanese bread fresh from the Al Barakah oven and some Hummos Shawarma - pureed chick peas with sesame paste, lemon juice, olive oil, topped with slices of Lamb Shawarma. It was fantastic! Just the comfort food I needed and very filling too. After this I glanced my eyes over the menu and noticed they sold Baklava a rich, sweet pastry made of layers of filo dough filled with chopped nuts, such as pistachios, and sweetened with syrup or honey.

After expressing an interest in this, I was offered a chance to taste another of the small sweet pastries they make - which has walnuts in the centre and was equally delicious! I took a some photographs of the place and its lovely food and whilst doing so noticed that Abbas was in the middle of preparing another traditional Lebanese dessert. Which he offered me a plate to try!

A very lucky lunchtime indeed!
